The Homosexuality in Ancient Times

The existence of same-sex romance and sexual desire in the East has been reported since ancient times. The relationships overwhelmed by such desire often resulted in the same-sex unions that were usually formed between men whose age tended to be quite different. The information about female relationships of the kind in ancient times is very poor. Of course many possible reasons for this can be named. Probably women were considered not important enough to write about. May be sexual attraction between women was not given such importance as it was between males or women were not allowed to enjoy sex and romance as they lacked the equal social status with men. Male love was extremely popular in Fujian, a province in the south of China. Carefully thought-out ceremonies were held there for men who wanted to marry youths. The marriages could last for many years, and then the elder partner helped the younger find a wife and raise his own family.

Same-sex unions have quite a long history in the western world. It is not a secret that same-sex relationships were permitted and celebrated in many early societies around Europe. There are not any clear proves of the existence of the same-sex marriages, but some evidence, often questionable, was discovered about the same-sex marriages in ancient Rome and Greece, and even in medieval Europe.

Nero, the Emperor of ancient Rome, at different times got married with two other men and nice wedding ceremonies were held. And it was not an exceptional situation as there are the same reports about other Roman Emperors. However, there appeared a number of reasons for growing intolerance towards homosexuals in Rome.

Christianity was becoming very influential and successfully promoted marriage-unions and having children. Another important reason was that the Romans tried to use sexuality for predominance and as a way to conquer a male enemy through raping. Later in Europe during Hellenic times, gay relationships between Greek men and youths who had come of age resembled marriage in several perspectives. The young men were in their mid-teens the same as women that were getting married. The relationship was permitted only under the agreement of the father, and just the same as when a daughter got married, everything depended on the social position of the suitor. The relationship, just like a marriage, was built upon special social and religious responsibilities, as well as involved sexual interaction.

There were discovered many documents that registered the homosexual marriages in the regions that were not under the domination of Christianity. In North America, among the Native American societies, there existed a special form of two-spirit-type relationships that were characterized by the existence of some tribe-members who were believed to be able to transform into females and took their responsibilities from an early age. The other men in the tribe got married to these two-spirit men and treated and rewarded them as wives. They were also considered to possess especially strong shaman’s abilities.

In the United States during the nineteenth century there appeared the notion of Boston marriage. Two women could have a continuous relationship based on real commitment. They usually shared accommodation, but it was publicly considered that there was no sexual relationship between them.

In Canada the members of religious community could not reach mutual understanding on the issue of homosexual marriage-unions as the United Church of Canada and a part of the Anglican Church of Canada supported the gays while Roman Catholics and the majority of conservative religious groups formed the opposition.

In 2002, the churches were allowed by the Anglican Eparchy in British Columbia to bless same sex marriages in special ceremonies. But bishops from Africa, Asia and Latin America, who represented more than one-third of Anglican Communion members around the world, expressed their strong disapproval by breaking their relations with the Eparchy.

The same-sex followers of the Jewish faith are permitted by Reform Judaism to get married in special religious weddings in synagogues.

In Africa, men living in the region of Congo could marry young men provided that they could make bride-payment to the father. But such marriages were most probably considered of a temporary type.
